Volleyball: Raiders start season 1-2 with three very competitive matches

The Hastings volleyball team has already matched their win total from 2017 so far this fall and have been competitive in all three of their matches. The Raiders started their season 1-2 with a 3-1 win over St. Paul Highland Park at home and losses to Simley (3-0) and Minneapolis South (3-2). Thursday night they continue Metro East Conference play when they travel to Hill-Murray.

The Raiders were swept in their home opener against MEC opponent Simley on August 28, but each set was tightly contested. They lost in the first set 25-23, the second 25-21 and third 25-19.

Two days later they hosted St. Paul Highland Park and bounced back with a 3-1 victory. Hastings dropped the first set 25-23, but then took the next three in a row 25-13, 25-15 and 25-20.

Hastings' first official road match of the season came on Tuesday at Minneapolis South and it could not have gotten much closer. Minneapolis South won the first set 25-22, but the Raiders responded by taking the second by a reversed 25-22 score. South won the third 25-18 but again Hastings countered by winning the fourth set 25-19. In the fifth and final set, Minneapolis South won 16-14 to win the set and the match.

This weekend the Raiders will play in a two-day tournament hosted by Apple Valley. Next Tuesday, Sept. 11, they welcome Hwy. 61 rival Park and then travel to Mahtomedi on September 13.
