Raiders boys' tennis advances to section semifinals

The fourth-seeded Hastings Raiders boys' tennis team started the Section 3AA team tournament off on the right foot with a 7-0 sweep of the 13th-seeded Simley Spartans on Tuesday, May 14, and then a 6-1 win over fifth-seeded Henry Sibley on May 16. They will face top-seeded Eastview on Monday, May 20, at Rosemount and should they win would play the winner of East Ridge and Eagan on May 22 and the Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville.

The week before, the Raiders won their last three regular season matches. They beat South St. Paul 7-0 on Monday, May 6, then Rosemount 5-2 on Thursday, May 9, where they finished a match that had been interrupted and moved due to rain. On Friday, May 10, they hosted Burnsville at the Roadside courts under the lights and beat the Blaze 4-3 with the win coming down to the last doubles match.

Team Sections

Against Simley, junior Colby Zak won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and senior Eric Howd prevailed in No. 2 singles with a clean sweep 6-0, 6-0. Senior Carson Konrady won No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 and fellow senior James Scharr had another sweep at No. 4 singles.

Seniors Matt Schlottman and Brian Nielson won No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-0 and juniors Brayden Nelson and Michael Wester took No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-0. Junior Ben Ascheman and senior Carter Teegarden won No. 3 doubles 6-0, 6-0 as well.

In the quarterfinals, Hastings routed Henry Sibley 6-1. Zak lost at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2 but the Raiders took the rest of the matches. Howd won at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4 and Konrady won No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-1. James Scharr prevailed at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-2.

The team of Schlottman and Nielsen at No. 1 doubles won 6-3, 6-2; Nelson and Wester prevailed at No. 2 doubles 6-4, 6-3 and Ascheman and Teegarden took No. 3 doubles 6-4, 6-3.

End of the regular season

The Raiders allowed just four points in five matches against the Packers while also getting two forfeits. Zak won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0 and Howd took No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1. South St. Paul forfeited the No. 3 and No. 4 singles spots.

Konrady and Schlottman took No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-1 and Nelson and Wester won No. 2 doubles by the same score. Ascheman and sophomore Charlie Scharr swept No. 3 doubles 6-0, 6-0.

Hastings beat Rosemount 5-2 after finishing their match from earlier in the season. Zak fell at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0 and Howd lost No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-3, but from there the Raiders won every single match. Konrady won at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-1 and James Scharr took No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1.

Schlottman and Nielsen won at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 7-6(5) while Nelson and Wester took No. 2 doubles 6-4, 6-2. Ascheman and Charlie Scharr won No. 3 doubles 6-1, 6-3.

The Raiders hosted the Blaze on "Fill the Hill" night at the tennis courts across from Roadside Park. The matches started at 7 p.m. and soon the teams found themselves playing under the lights.

Zak fell at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1 and so did Howd at No. 2 singles. Konrady took No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0 and James Scharr also won No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1. Schlottman and Nielsen won at No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-2 while Nelson and Wester fell at No. 2 doubles 6-3, 6-1. Ascheman and Teegarden won No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-2.
