Boys' Tennis: Hastings beats Rosemount under the lights

Fill the Hill

The Hastings boys' tennis team hosted its third annual "Fill the Hill" night where they play a match under the lights at the courts across from Roadside Park. Last Friday, they hosted Rosemount in front of over 100 spectators that sat on the hill next to the courts. Free food was provided and the Raider seniors were honored before the match.

The Raiders came away with a 4-3 win over the Irish, primarily thanks to a sweep of the doubles matches. Sophomore Colby Zak lost in No. 1 singles to Aashish Bharath 6-0, 6-1 and senior Grant Hollar fell in No. 2 singles to Tygen Goldammer 6-0, 6-2. Senior Brandon Kurilla had Hastings' only singles win, defeating Austin Johnson in No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-3. Junior James Scharr fell in No. 4 singles to Jake Green 6-3, 0-6, 6-1.

The team of senior Joe Zak and junior Carson Konrady beat Kelson Fox and Tyler Fray 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles. Senior John Rupp and junior Eric Howd took No. 2 doubles against Eric Otness and Aidan Buesing 6-0, 6-0, while juniors Brian Nielsen and Matt Schlottman beat Unnath Salagram and Collin Larson in No. 3 doubles 6-4, 6-3.

Two exhibition matches were played as well. Senior Sam Poncelet beat Wyatt Feldsien 6-2, 6-3 and the team of seniors Beau Peine and Decker Whyle fell to Jake Otness and Jonathan Cavalli 6-1, 6-1.

Cretin-Derham Hall tournament

The next day Hastings competed in a tournament at Cretin-Derham Hall. They beat Cretin-Derham Hall 5-2, fell to Bloomington Jefferson 4-3 and won against Hopkins 6-1.

Hollar (6-0, 6-1), Kurilla (6-1, 6-3) and Konrady (6-4, 6-1) all won their singles matches against Cretin-Derham Hall, while Colby Zak fell in No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1. The doubles teams of Rupp/Joe Zak and Howd/Nielsen both won 6-0, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-2 respectively. Schlottman and Scharr lost in No. 3 doubles 2-6, 6-2, (7-4).

Against Bloomington Jefferson, both Colby Zak (6-0, 6-2) and Hollar (6-0, 6-1) fell in No. 1 and 2 singles respectively. Kurilla took No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2 and Konrady No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-2. Joe Zak/Rupp got the lone doubles win at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(4), while Howd/Nielsen lost 7-6(4), 6-1 and Schlottman/Whyle fell 6-4, 6-1.

Finally, the Raiders swept the singles matches against Hopkins. Colby Zak won 5-7, 6-0, (7-1) and Hollar took No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-4. Kurilla prevailed in No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-4 and Konrady took No. 4 singles 4-6, 6-1, (7-2). Joe Zak and Rupp lost in No. 1 doubles 6-1, 7-6(4). Howd and Nielsen took No. 2 doubles 6-4, 6-3 and Schlottman/Whyle won No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-3.

Hastings traveled to Northfield on Monday, May 7, and swept the Raiders 7-0. They then went to Mahtomedi on Wednesday, host Hill-Murray on Thursday and go to Eagan on Friday.
