Raiders tennis starts season with modified doubles tournament

Neither snow nor cold could stop the Hastings boys' tennis team from starting its competitive season. The Raiders and head coach Mick Willette hosted a modified doubles tournament this past weekend at the Apple Valley Sports Arena. Competing teams were Hastings, Apple Valley, Roseville and Hudson.

Each match was simply a regular match, but only doubles. Scoring was a single set to eight points and a tie-breaker at 7-7, called an eight-game pro-set. Each team played a round-robin and at the end of all matches, the total number of points calculated to determine the winner.

Hastings swept Roseville 4-0. Colby Zak and Grant Hollar won 8-5, Joe Zak and Carson Konrady won 8-6, Eric Howd and John Rupp won 8-3 and James Scharr and Matt Schlottman won 8-2.

The Raiders beat Apple Valley 3-1. Hollar and Brand Kurilla lost 8-5, Joe Zak and Konrady won 8-6, Rupp and Howd won 8-0 and Schlottman and Brian Nielsen won 8-1.

In their final match, Hastings fell to Hudson 3-1. The Raiders' lone win came from Konrady and Howd, who won 8-2. The Zaks (Joe and Colby) fell 6-8, Kurilla and Rupp lost 4-8 and Scharr/Nielsen lost 3-8.

Hastings took second at the meet with 82 points, just five behind Hudson who took first with 87. The Raiders will next be in action on Thursday, April 12, against South St. Paul, or on Saturday, April 14, at Eagan.
