Hastings Area Swim Team competes at state championships

The Hastings Area Swim Team (HAST) competed in the Minnesota Short Course Yards state championships March 7-10 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The team took fifth in Class AA and 16th overall with 621.5 points.

Thirty-five HAST swimmers competed, set 14 team records and new times in the Summer Speedo, ZONE, CHAMP and A divisions. Ashtyn Stewart also won the third-place High Point Award. The swimmers below placed in the top-16 and earned team points:

Kira Aarness took sixth in the 500-yard freestyle and eighth in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. Emelia Berg finished 10th in the 500 freestyle and 16th in the 200 freestyle. Emma Dehmlow was the champion in the 50 butterfly, fifth in the 50 backstroke, sixth in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 100 freestyle and the 100 individual medley.

Thomas Foss placed seventh in the 50 backstroke, eighth in the 100 backstroke and 50 butterfly and 11th in the 100 butterfly. Natasha Girgen took 14th in the 1,650 freestyle while Isabel Green finished 15th.

Lauren Jenkins was runner-up in the 1,650 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 200 and 400 individual medley, and third in the 200 and 500 freestyle. James Jensen finished fifth in the 50 butterfly, 10th in the 50 backstroke, ninth in the 100 butterfly, 10th in the 200 individual medley, 12th in the 100 individual medley and 13th in the 100 backstroke.

Sofia Kovalenko placed fifth in the 100 butterfly and Dylan Purrington 12th in the 400 individual medley. Brandon Schwartz took 11th in the 200 backstroke and 15th in the 100 backstroke, while Ashtyn Stewart won the 100 freestyle, runner-up in the 50 freestyle and butterfly, and third in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly and 100 individual medley. Caleb Urban took 12th in the 1,650 freestyle and 16th in the 1,000 freestyle.

The relay team of Chloe Aarness, Natalie Knutson, Kovalenko and Berg took 10th in the 200 medley relay and 14th in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Foss, Samuel Green, James Jensen and Carter Herbst finished 15th in the 200 medley relay.

The team of Kira Aarness, Lauren Jenkins, Josephine Larson and Stewart were runners-up in the 400 freestyle relay, fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay and fifth in the 400 medley relay.

Brandon Schwartz, Urban, Adam Duer and Jeremy Cory were 15th in the 200 medley relay and 15th in the 400 medley relay. Fleming, Girgen, Kendra Kosmoski and Kiya Riley finished 11th in the 800 freestyle relay. Finally, Schwartz, Dylan Purrington, Philip Jensen and Avery Stoffel placed 14th in the 200 medley relay.

Also competing were Sydney Fleming, Katie Gjelhaug, Blake Harre, Kendal Jenkins, Philip Jensen, Natalie Knutson, Kendra Kosmoski, Ava McNamara, Kiya Riley and Devin Schwartz. Competing on relays were Clara Birken, Berlyn Byrd, Joseph Everson, Jackson Harre and Sam Rhode.

Setting new HAST records were Lauren Jenkins, Purrington, Stewart and the relay team of Kira Aarness, Lauren Jenkins, Josephine Larson and Ashtyn Stewart. Kiya Riley set a new Summer Speedo time, Kira Aarness and Kovalenko set new ZONE times, Harre and Kendal Jenkins set new CHAMP times and Harre set a new A time.
