The Hastings Raiders boys and girls soccer team welcomed Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa (PIZM) and Apple Valley to Todd Field at McNamara Stadium on Saturday for back-to-back matches. The Raiders certainly put on a show as they combined for 11 goals and two wins in front of the home crowd.
The boys started off the day with a route of PIZM 7-0, exploding for five goals in the second half after leading 2-0. PIZM never seemed to be able to get anything going and the Raiders were rarely threatened. Senior Joe Carlson had a hat-trick while junior Jakub Youngstrom, junior Tyler Goebel and sophomore Simon Hedin also scored. With the win, the boys are now 3-2 overall. Earlier in the week, the lost at North St. Paul 8-2 and the week before beat Two Harbors on the road 12-1. They host South St. Paul on Tuesday, Sept. 11, and then St. Thomas Academy on Thursday.
After that the girls welcomed an Apple Valley team that came into the match with a 3-1 record. However, the Raiders took it to the Eagles, scoring two goals in the first half (courtesy of senior Hannah Hubbart and junior Ari Green). Apple Valley cut the Raiders lead to 2-1 before Green scored her second goal of the match on a penalty kick to make it 3-1. The Eagles would score one more goal and Raiders as well (from junior Libby Larcholey) and 4-2 was the final.
Two days before Hastings traveled to North St. Paul and beat the Polars 2-0. The week before they lost to Duluth Marshall 3-1 and tied with Duluth Denfeld 1-1. The girls are now 2-2-1 overall. They host South St. Paul on Tuesday, Sept. 11, welcome St. Paul Como Park on Thursday and then go to Richfield on Saturday.
