Soccer: Raider teams start season with non-conference play

The Hastings Raiders boys' and girls' soccer teams started their regular seasons with a slate of non-conference matchups. The girls' lost their season and home opener on Friday, 2-1, to Byron while the boys went 1-1 with a 1-0 win over Richfield Thursday on the road before falling to Park, 5-3, at home on Saturday.

The Raider girls fell behind 2-0 in the first half of their game against Byron and were not able to complete the comeback, losing 2-1. They next travel to Duluth for a two-game road trip against Duluth Marshall and Duluth Denfeld Aug. 30-31. After that, Hastings travels to North St. Paul on September 6 before hosting Apple Valley on September 8.

Meanwhile, the Hastings boys started their season with a 1-0 win over Richfield. Senior Logan Boogren scored the lone goal of the game for the Raiders.

They then hosted Hwy. 61-rival Park of Cottage Grove and lost, 5-3. Scoring for the Raiders were senior Evan Rumann, sophomore Japeth Gudissa and junior Jakub Youngstrom, while junior Bradley Route was credited with an assist.

Hastings traveled to Two Harbors on Tuesday, Aug. 28, after this article went to print. They then go to North St. Paul on September 6 and host Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa on September 8.
