BIWABIK, Minn. — Hastings Raiders sophomore Trevor Caflisch competed at the Minnesota State High School League state nordic ski tournament last week at Giants Ridge.
Caflisch competed in a field of almost 160 skiers and finished 133rd. After the first race, the freestyle, he was 139th with a time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds. The leader at that point had a time of 13:54. Caflisch finished the second race, the classic, in 129th with a time of 17:51.6 for a combined time of 35:01.6 and 133rd overall. The winner was junior Garrett Beckrich of Grand Rapids, who finished with a time of 28:45.7.
Caflisch had to overcome with some adversity at the start of the race according to head coach John DeWall.
"I thought the race went well, in the morning at about two kilometers he broke a pole on an icy section of the course, but he got a new one replaced right away so that was a good situation," he said. "He passed probably seven people from the morning to the afternoon, so I thought overall Trevor had a really, really solid race. He was very happy with his race overall, a great experience as a sophomore to ski that course and race it. Every time you ski it you get better on it for sure."
Even before the broken pole, DeWall said that Caflisch had battled the flu the weekend before so he was not fully at 100 percent at the time of the race.
"Overall though, he came out of it and skied very, very solid for us, so that was good," he said.
Giants Ridge in Biwabik is demanding course that DeWall said challenges skiers' cardio and technical skills.
"Anytime you are doing that course, it's very technical, especially the skating course," DeWall said. "The more you ski it, the better you are at it. So for the first time, it's always a little more difficult. It's always difficult, but again the more you know it, the more you ski it, the better off you are. (Caflisch) will definitely have set himself up for future performances on that course."
There are no seniors on the boys' or girls' teams, so DeWall will have the same time plus newcomers for next season. Check back in the next few weeks for a season recap article.
