Raiders alpine ski teams on to state
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the nordic skit teams were headed to state, not alpine.
The Hastings Raiders boys and girls alpine ski teams both qualified for the state meet after finishing first and second respectively at their section meet last week. A year after qualifying four individuals for the state meet in 2017, the Raiders knew they had a very good chance of qualifying one or both teams this season and followed through on that potential.
Both teams were led by their seniors as the boys finished first ahead of St. Thomas Academy by 14 team points and the girls were second, 23 points behind Minneapolis Southwest.
Seniors Jacob Peine, who qualified for state individually last year, and Jack Caturia took second and sixth, respectively. Peine had a combined time of one minute and 1.59 seconds and Caturia in 1:03.04. The other two who scored points for the boys were senior Jacob Molitor in 13th with a time of 1:05.55 while younger brother, sophomore Sam Molitor, finished 18th in 1:06.77. The two pushers were seniors Hayden Niebur, who placed 36th in 1:12.30, and Josh McKinney in 38th with a time of 1:12.99.
The girls were led by the three seniors who qualified for state last year. Kayla Boogren took fourth with a time of 1:07.79, two spots behind her was Shannon O'Connor in sixth, 1:08.38, and Josie Pechous, who placed 11th in 1:09.43. The last scorer was junior Alexa Kimmes, who took 32nd with a time of 1:16.08. Senior Vika McGrath finished in 36th (1:18.90) and senior Logan Doty placed 41st in 1:21.28.
Both teams will compete in the state alpine skiing championship on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minn.
