Hastings junior Ava McNamara took second in the 100-yard butterfly this past weekend at the MSHSL Class AA state swimming and diving meet to lead the Raiders’ seven entries. Hastings as a team took 15th with 43 team points though McNamara was the lone Raider to advance to the championship finals in her event. 

McNamara swam a preliminary time of 56.34 seconds, which was also second best, to advance to the championship finals and then cut almost a second for a time of 55.62 for a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly.  Junior Claire Reinke was the champion with a time of 54.36.

Hastings had three other entries make the consolation finals -- senior Kendal Jenkins in the 100 backstroke, the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Jenkins took 11th (third in the consolation finals) with a time of 58.59 after swimming a 58.88 in the prelims. 

The 200 medley relay team of Kendal Jenkins, McNamara, freshman Josey Larson and sophomore Ashtyn Stewart took 12 (fourth in the consolation finals) in 1 minute, 50.46 seconds after a time of 1:50.35 in the prelims.

Then the team of Stewart, Kendal Jenkins, senior Ireland Zaruba and freshman Kira Aarness also took 12th with a time of 3:38.55 in the 400 freestyle relay. They swam a 3:39.37 during the prelims.

McNamara also swam the preliminaries for the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.97 but did not advance. The Raiders 200 freestyle relay team of McNamara, sophomore Lauren Jenkins, Zaruba and Aarness also did not advance past the prelims with a time of 1:41.85. Stewart swam a 24.86 in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle but did not advance.
