The Hastings Raiders wrestling team finished in sixth place in Class AAA at the Minnesota State High School League’s team state wrestling tournament last Thursday. Hastings went 1-2 on the day with a win over Apple Valley and losses to Anoka and Northfield.
The No. 4-seeded Raiders lost to No. 5 Anoka in the first round 41-27 and dropped into the consolation bracket.
“A very tough Anoka team, and it came down to one match, a toss up match and we lost,” said Hastings head coach Tim Haneberg about the first-round loss. “We kind of put different kids in the lineup after that so the team score wasn’t as close as we thought it would be.”

They wrestled right away again after the Anoka loss and beat unseeded Apple Valley 36-20 to advance to the fifth-place match against Northfield, who was also unseeded.
“Came back next round against Apple Valley, which it’s always nice to beat them obviously, and the kids wrestled great,” Haneberg added.

The dual against Northfield came down to the 220-pound match with Northfield leading 30-27. Northfield was without a heavyweight and whoever they would have plugged into that weight class most likely would be pinned, so it all came down to who won between Austin Leflay for Hastings and Mason Pagel for Northfield.
However, the dual ended in controversy as Leflay inadvertently headbutted Pagel and Pagel was unable to continue the match. Since Pagel could not continue the match due to an act against the rules, Hastings forfeited the match and Northfield received six team points, which put the dual out of reach. Blake Clemons pinned Joseph Schultz at 285 for Hastings and the final was 36-33 Northfield.
“The last one, a couple matches didn’t go our way in the beginning, I thought we made an awesome comeback toward the end there, but just came up a little short in the end,” Haneberg said about the heartbreaking loss to Northfield.
He said they call the head butt unsportsmanlike conduct and if the wrestler cannot continue after the penalty, the offender loses the match.
