Athlete of the Week-Payton Burow.jpg

Hastings junior Payton Burow is this week's Hastings Star Gazette Athlete of the Week after consecutive 100-yard games in wins over Apple Valley and Simley. Alec Hamilton / Hastings Star Gazette

Hastings junior Payton Burow was one the Raiders football team’s top rushers last year during the COVID-shortened season, leading the team in yards (241) and second on the team in attempts (65) through seven games.

However, this year he is blowing those numbers out of the water through Hastings’ first three contests. Last year Burow had one game over 100 yards and this year he already has two. He is 7 yards short of his yardage mark from last year in less than half the games and less attempts. Burow also has one of the Raiders’ 2 rushing touchdowns.

Burow has run the ball 46 times so far in 2021 for 234 yards and a touchdown. He has the strength and balance to run between the tackles along with the speed to bounce a run outside and get to the edge. Burow is this week’s Hastings Star Gazette Athlete of the Week. Read his comments below about football,

Q: Did you set any goals for this season?

PB: I just want to contribute to the team as much as I can. I’d love to take it to the next level as far as I can, but right now I’m here for my dogs, you know?

Q: How do you think you’ve improved since last season?

PB: I think I just feel a lot more comfortable. A lot of these guys I’m playing with are my friends, we hang out outside of the football field, I just feel more developed as a player.

Q: What’s it like being back in front of the fans/student section?

PB: It’s crazy, there’s nothing like hearing everyone go crazy.

Q: Homecoming is here in a couple weeks, what are you looking forward to about that?

PB: I’m pumped, mostly I just want to come out and win, but there’s also the festivities and everything like that. I want to have a good time as well.

Q: Do you have any favorite part about Homecoming or the school events?

PB: I’ll let you know if we win the game!

Q: Any games on the schedule this year where you were like “oh I’m looking forward to that one”?

PB: Not really, we just like to play one game at a time and the next one is the only one that matters and so on. Just going to do what we can do.

Q: When you’re not playing, working out, that sort of thing, what can your friends find you doing?

PB: We just drive around town, hanging out with whoever we can, playing pickup football, playing basketball, whatever it is just staying busy.

Q: Is there a player you model your game after?

PB: Walter Payton, in Little Raiders they called me Sweetness, I’m trying to bring that back.

Q: Pick up any new/interesting hobbies during quarantine?

PB: Not really, just watching a lot of football, trying to develop mentally as well as physically.

Q: Have a favorite team?

PB: My favorite college team is Auburn, they play tomorrow night, gotta watch that. And my favorite NFL team is probably Baltimore, I really like Lamar Jackson.

Q: Why Auburn?

PB: I’ve liked them ever since Cam Newton went there.
