Cross-country: Hastings' Nogle runs his way to state
Hastings senior David Nogle qualified for the state cross country meet in his first year of the sport Thursday, Oct. 26, at Brooktree Golf Course in Owatonna. Meanwhile, the boys' team as a whole took 12th out of 16 teams while the girls placed 15th.
First year, no problem
Nogle led the Raider boys by taking 10th with a time of 16 minutes, 37.30 seconds, which allowed him to qualify for state by a fairly comfortable margin.
With only a year of cross country under his belt, Nogle said that the area where he has made the most improvement is the mental aspect.
"I've got my strategy down a lot more," he said. "I wouldn't say physically I've improved a bunch, but I've got my pacing down. I go out slower and get faster to pick guys versus sprinting in the beginning and trying to hold it."
Going forward to the state meet, Nogle said he has his goals but he will definitely enjoy the experience.
"I'd like to finish in the top-100, but I guess (going to) state is just the cherry on top," he said.
Nogle will run at the state tournament on Saturday, Nov. 4, which is held at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
Behind Nogle were junior (17:20.10) and fellow senior Griffin Myers (17:39.90), who finished in 39th and 59th respectively. Sophomore Devon Haraldson took 81st with a time of 18:05.00 while fellow sophomore Luke Harris finished 95th in 18:28.80. Pusher Isaac Huntington (another sophomore) placed 101st with a time of 18:43.10.
The top runner for the girls was freshman Linnea Urban, who returned to racing after an injury sidelined her the past few weeks. Urban took 38th with a time of 20:15.00 and was less than a minute off the pace for a top-10 finish.
Finishing back-to-back-to-back were fellow freshmen Avery Daley (21:13.60) and Linnea Hanson (21:17.60), and junior Megan Mattson (21:17.90) in 69th, 70th and 71st. Freshman Emma Bratvold placed 96th with a time of 22:18.00, fellow freshman Abby Siebenaler took 105th in 23:54.20 and sophomore Brianna Amundson took 109th (25:05.30).
