The Hastings Raiders girls' tennis team earned the seventh seed in section 1AA and beat 10th-seed Winona 4-3 in the opening round of section playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Anytime Fitness in Lakeville. The week prior, Hastings beat Hill-Murray 5-2 in their last regular season dual on Thursday, Sept. 28.
Hastings took three of four singles matches against the Pioneers and two of three doubles. Elizabeth Henrichs won first singles 6-3, 6-1; Amy Roach swept second singles 6-0, 6-0 and Emily Beyer took third singles 6-1, 7-6(6). Kayla Boogren fell in fourth singles 2-6, 1-6.

The Raiders swept the doubles matches against Winona and were able to snag one singles match to get the 4-3 victory. Beyer won third singles for Hastings 6-1, 6-1; Kranz lost first singles 5-7, 2-6; Roach fell in second singles 1-6, 1-6 and Alex Doughty dropped fourth singles 3-6, 5-7.

"Our doubles dominated and Winona's singles players were strong," head coach Marissa Welch said. "Emily (Beyer) played excellent to win her singles match, while Lizzie (Henrichs), Amy (Roach) and Alex (Doughty) all had hard fought battles."
While their opponent for Thursday, Oct. 5, has yet to be determined, Welch said that her team will be ready.
"I'm very excited for the challenge as many of our girls came off the court with a bounce in their step and ready for the next round," she said. "They've got heart and fight and are enjoying playing!"
Should the girls win Thursday, they would then advance to the section 1AA team finals in Rochester on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
