Wrestling: Raiders face nation’s best at The Clash

Just about any wrestling team in the country that wants to be humbled has its big chance in Rochester over the New Year’s break every year. Hastings and dozens of the nation’s top teams again convened there for The Clash, the top wrestling tournament in the country.

The meet started with a close 32-28 loss to Glenbard North from Illinois on Friday, Jan. 2.

Hastings then beat Victor Valley, California, 38-31.

In the third match of the day on Jan. 2, Hastings beat the two-time defending state champs from Mesa Mountain View in Arizona, 33-26.

That set up Hastings to compete in the fifth-place bracket on Saturday.

In the day’s opening match, Hastings lost to Prior Lake, 47-13. In the second match of the day, Hastings lost to a team from Jefferson City, Missouri, 32-30, and then in the final against a team from Hermiston, Oregon, Hastings lost 55-15. The Raiders went 2-4 at the tournament and placed 20th out of 32 teams.

“Did we get better this weekend? We did,” coach Josh McLay said. “Did we take some lumps? We did. Even in those losses, you’re finding some ways you can improve and get better.”

Among the highlights from the day was a match wrestled by Drake Guck. He faced the No. 3 wrestler in the nation and lost.

“At the time, coming off the mat, he wasn’t too thrilled about it,” McLay said. “When I explained his opponent was one of the top kids in the country, he understood.”

Another highlight was the final of the match against Mesa Mountain View. Blaine Wasvick took to the mat with the Raiders clinging to a one-point lead. The Raiders needed a win from Wasvick and he delivered with a pin at 2:11.

“We got to see some really tough competition,” McLay said. “We held our own and saw some areas we need to improve in. We’re definitely progressing, but by no means am I satisfied with where we’re at.”
