Raider boys place third at conference cross country championships

The Hastings boys cross country team came within a few seconds of placing second at the Metro East Conference championships on Oct. 14 at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park.

Henry Sibley won the meet with 30 points, and then St. Thomas Academy and Hastings tied for second with 81 points. The Cadets earned second place with the tiebreaker.

Will Caturia was the leading Hastings runner, placing ninth with a time of 17 minutes and 54.5 seconds on the 5k course.

Bobby Verchota was 13th in 18:06.9. Mike Tappella was 16th in 18:12.4. Will Briercliffe took 20th in 18:31.5, followed by Nick Johnson (23rd in 18:36.1) and Mason Minnick (41st in 19:22.8).

The Hastings girls were seventh in their race with 174 points. The girls race was won by Mahtomedi with 44 points.

Abberly Smith was the top Hastings runner, finishing 24th on the 4k course in 17:30.9. Reilly Johnson was 33rd in 18:01.2.

Alexis Edmundson finished 34th in 18:01.4; Ciara Christensen was 41st in 18:36.0; Quinn Myers was 42nd in 18:40.4; Hannah Peterson was 48th in 19:32.0; and Libby Judge was 49th in 19:42.8.

Junior varsity

The Hastings junior varsity boys placed second with 33 points. St. Thomas won the junior varsity meet with 24 points.

Griffin Myers led Hastings with a first-place finish in 18:55.3. Jonathan Vouk was third in 19:11.3; Nicholaus Sampson was eighth in 19:23.9; Seth Greengo was 10th in 19:33.7; Levi O’Toole was 11th in 19:34.8; Brandon Haraldson was 20th in 19:59.2; and Austin Rink finished 22nd in 20:00.2.

The Hastings girls junior varsity team was fourth in their race.

Megan Myers led the way with a 12th-place finish in 19:19.2. Also racing were: Kira Welshons, 15th, 19:58.0; Cecilia Carlson, 22nd, 21:11.8; Kaitlyn Walderon, 23rd, 21:14.0; and Savannah Henderson, 29th, 22:36.0.
