Ski teams race at Como Classic

While their friends likely spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day staying warm at home, the Hastings Nordic Ski team competed in a big meet Monday. The team raced at Battle Creek Park.

Coach John Dewall was encouraged by several of the results he saw, including the finish by Joe Rabaey, a first-year member of the team.

"He's coming along remarkably fast," Dewall said. "He's in great shape from cross country running this fall. He's picked up the technique quickly. The learning curve for him goes quick. His times are dropping. He was our No. 1 guy on Monday."

Sean Eglington had a good race for the boys, too, Dewall said.

"He's been working really hard," Dewall said. "He's done a real nice job for us here. He had a good race."

Seventh-grader Jonah Schill fared well, too.

"He's just a real aggressive skier," Dewall said. "He's learning the sport real quickly. I thought he raced really well for us."

For the girls, Sarah Peterson led the way. The junior captain has been the team's top skier all year long.

"She has been racing real well," Dewall said. "She's a very competitive skier. Her goal is to earn all-conference and get on to the state meet. Obviously, we'd like to see her get to the state meet. She's progressing very nicely."

The season is quickly winding down, Dewall said, with the conference meet just a few weeks away.

"The kids, over the next two weeks, are looking at their results and seeing where they are at and what they need to do to improve and get to where they want to get," Dewall said.
