Guelle takes fifth at state
Hastings High School runner Dan Guelle took fifth place at the Class AA state track and field meet Saturday, June 12, in the 400-meter dash. He ran a time of 49.36.
Guelle said he was not pleased with his performance. He pushed too hard at the start and didn't run his own race, he said.
"I think I might have been too focused on the other people," he said.
He was doing well much of the race, even into the final 100-meter stretch.
"I turned the last corner in first," Guelle said.
Before he could reach the finish line, he lost his lead and four runners passed him.
The day before, Guelle won his heat in the 400 preliminaries, running a 48.71 to earn the top seed going into the finals.
"I ran as good a race as I could in the prelims," he said.
Not only was he racing a strong field, but getting a better time there would give him a better placement in the final.
"I wanted to get a good lane, and I did," he added.
Guelle also raced in the 200-meter dash at state. He placed 11th in the preliminaries with a time of 22.43. The top nine times advanced to the finals.
The state meet was Guelle's last run for HHS. He'll run for Mankato State University next year. His plans for the summer are similar to those of previous summers: work out and keep practicing with his coach to get ready for practices next fall.
