Miesville beats Red Wing in extra innings on the Fourth of July

The Miesville Mudhens and Red Wing Aces met at Jack Ruhr Field in Miesville on the Thursday, the Fourth of July, to celebrate the day with some town baseball. After the Mudhens got out to a quick lead, the Aces were able to chip away and eventually tie the game. Tied 4-4, the game went into extra innings until Miesville walked off victorious 5-4 after an RBI single by Austin LaDoux.

It was Military Appreciation Day and right after the singing of the national anthem, a local service man and his wife were presented and wrapped with a Quilt of Valor courtesy of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which is meant to promote healing and comfort in a veteran who has been touched by war.

The win for the Mudhens was just their second in the last seven games. They had lost four in a row before beating the Elko Express on July 10 10-3, but then they dropped a rematch against Elko 7-5 heading into Thursday. Miesville is now 9-6 overall and 3-3 in Section 1B. All of Section 1B is currently separated by just one game as the Dundas Dukes lead with a 3-2 record while the Hampton Cardinals sit at the bottom at 2-3.

Miesville struck first with one run in the bottom of the first off of an RBI fielder's choice by Deryk Marks that scored Brad Goulet. The Mudhens added two more runs in the bottom of the third when Marks added another RBI fielder's choice that again scored Goulet and Nate Hammes brought home Marks on an RBI double.

Red Wing cut the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when Brady Schroeder hit a solo home run. They then scored another run in the top of the sixth with an RBI sacrifice fly ball Josh Thygesen that scored Schroeder and the Aces trailed by one.

The Mudhens were able to get a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run of their own by Joey Werrner. However, the Aces tied the game in the top of the seventh on three straight hits. Adam Thygesen singled, Ty Buck doubled and Corey Tauer scored them both with a two-RBI single to knot the game at four apiece.

Tied 4-4, the game went into extra innings until the bottom of the 10th when Werner led off with a walk, Max Gamm singled and LaDoux brought Werner home with a walk-off single of his own to give Miesville the 5-4 win.

Aaron Johnson started on the mound for Red Wing and threw 51/3 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts. He was relieved by Teddy Tauer who pitched the remaining 4 ⅓ innings and was ultimately tagged with the loss, giving up just the one run in the bottom of the 10th on a total of four hits and a walk with one strikeout. Adam Thygesen, Buck and Corey Tauer each had two hits apiece for the Aces while Corey Tauer led the team with two RBI.

Thomas Shogren was the starter for Miesville and he went 5 ⅔ innings and gave up two runs on four hits, six walks and two hit batsmen and one strikeout. He was relieved by Jacob Dickmeyer who eventually got the win after going 4 ⅓ innings and giving up two runs (which tied the game) on four hits with five strikeouts. Hammes led the Mudhens with three hits while Marks had two RBI and both Goulet and Werner scored twice.

Miesville hosts the Jordan Brewers on Wednesday, July 10, and then the Rochester Royals come to Jack Ruhr Field on Friday, July 12. The Mudhens play the Northfield Knights in Miesville on Sunday, July 14.
