Sanchez named December Rotary Student of the Month
Hastings High School student Sophia Sanchez was named the Hastings Rotary Club's December Student of the Month. Sanchez was honored at a Rotary meeting Dec. 14.
Sanchez was chosen as student of the month for her leadership skills, compassion for classmates and her dedication to the activities she is involved in.
She is a leader within several clubs including the Knowledge Bowl, Spanish Club, Spanish Honors Society, orchestra, Raider's Digest newspaper and the Feminism Club.
According to a nomination letter, Sanchez consistently exceeds expectations as a student leader. An example would be when she met with the other club leaders over the summer and came to school with agendas for the entire school year.
As the president of the Feminism Club, Sanchez worked with the American Association of University Women to host a presentation for college-bound students and their parents about sexual assault on college campuses. Sanchez was instrumental in making the event a success. She met with leaders of AAUW to plan and advertise the event, she helped create and hang flyers, she was interviewed on KDWA and featured in a promotional video by Hastings Community TV.
In addition to the extracurriculars listed above, Sanchez also volunteers as a writing coach in the Hastings High School Writing Center, works with children at the YMCA and helps the Pleasant Hill librarians with their summer reading programs.
As the daughter of an immigrant, Sanchez has a unique perspective of battling prejudice that she has been willing to share through editorials in the school newspaper and volunteering on a school committee to influence school climate. According to a nomination letter, "she is keenly aware of cultural differences and strives to make everyone feel included."
Sanchez plans to attend college next year. She has been accepted by many colleges, but she is still undecided.
