Kendama event planned at Second Childhood on Saturday

In a world dominated by battery operated toys, video games and other electronic devices, a simple wooden skill toy was the top selling toy in Hastings this Christmas season according to Barb Hollenbeck owner of Second Childhood Toys in downtown Hastings.

Now, Hollenbeck has planned a free kendama event at the store from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11.

A crew of kendama experts are coming to Hastings to teach area children tricks and techniques.

Hollenbeck said she sold 1,657 kendamas in 2013, most of which were sold late last year.

“In my 17 years of business in Hastings, I haven’t seen a craze this intense since the beanie babies” she said.

The Kendama is a wooden Japanese skill toy that consists of a ball on a string tied to a handle that tapers to a spike and has a set of cups near the spike.
