Local and state MAGA extremist candidates may talk a good game about freedom, family and faith on their websites and social media posts, but the reality is far different.

Representing right-wing viewpoints consistently opposed by 70 percent of Americans, their narrow-minded MAGA ideas would lead our community and state to a place that excludes anyone not marching in unison with their way of thinking.

Why is the right wing not concerned about the public's freedom to not get shot, of women to make their own personal health care decisions; to speak out without fear or reprisals; to worship, or not, as we wish; and the freedom to be who you are and love who you love?

Why are MAGA candidates not advocating for the liberty and personal freedom of families when the city government proposes redefining a family? Why are they not supporting the rights of single parents and same-gender couples to live in peace and raise kids, or protecting our families from the harm caused by domestic abusers who are allowed to be heavily armed and likely to turn their weapons on spouses and children?

And why are right-wing candidates saying they stand for faith, as long as the rest of us live according to their church’s rules and narrow point of view? Why have so many of them touted only one religion and scripture as the one we all must follow, somehow equating it with patriotism?

Conversely, I trust women to make very personal decisions about their own bodies -- not men who cannot bear children and refuse to care for them after birth. I trust teachers and education professionals to teach our children. And I trust individuals to follow their own faith journey and not have politicians decide how the rest of us should worship and live our daily lives.

Those now following the MAGA cult once said they believed in local control, liberty and personal responsibility. Apparently now that’s all out the window because people won’t live according to their doctrine.

Please pay attention to what right-wing candidates are saying as they campaign this summer and fall. They are out in the open, telling us who they are and how they want to shape our city, state and country. The only thing standing between democracy and an authoritarian theocracy is you.
