April 2018 story: HMS principal Mark Zuzek announces resignation

Hastings Middle School Principal Mark Zuzek announced to colleagues April 10 that he has accepted a position as superintendent for Intermediate School District 917.

The details of a transition are yet to be known, but Zuzek said he is committed to ensuring the transition is smooth. He plans to complete projects prior to his departure including making sure the budget and schedule are ready for the 2018-2019 school year.

Zuzek said it will be hard to leave Hastings Public Schools as he has worked 28 out of his 30-year career at Hastings Middle School.

“I am proud of our accomplishments, humble about my role in the successes we have had, and grateful for the time that we have worked alongside each other,” Zuzek said wrote in a letter to colleagues.

District 917 is a consortium of schools in the Southeast Metropolitan area. Hastings Public Schools is a member district to the group of schools that make up 917. District 917 provides services to students that have circumstances that make learning challenging at a typical school or the student has a desire to learn in a different way.

“Many of the things that I am most passionate about in education have to do with serving the students that struggle the most,” Zuzek said.

Zuzek said he plans to continue to reside in Hastings, which will make the transition a bit easier.

“I will also be continuing as an active participant in several local initiatives,” Zuzek wrote.
