Pedestrian struck, killed crossing Highway 3 in Farmington
A 38-year-old Farmington woman died Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Highway 3, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
April Janeen Sterling was struck by a 2005 Hyundai Sante Fe SUV just before 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9, 2019, while crossing east to west across Highway 3 at 209th Street West, an incident report states. Sterling was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, Frances Mays, 28, of Farmington, was traveling northbound on Highway 3 at the intersection of 209th Street West. Mays and a passenger were unharmed, according to the report.
Alcohol was not involved in the accident. Road conditions at the time included snow and ice.
Sterling’s family hopes to gain answers about why she was crossing the highway. She was allegedly awaiting a ride home from her husband after meeting with friends at Carbone’s restaurant.
Local residents have voiced concerns about public safety along Highway 3. The county highway serves as a commuter road and carries heavy north-south traffic that travels at varying high speeds.
The speed limit at the incident location is 45 mph.
