The Dakota County Library has expanded iLAB equipment to more locations including the Pleasant Hill Library at 1490 S. Frontage Road. The new available equipment includes 3-D printers, Apple iMac computers and Adobe Creative Suite.

Mary Scheide, manager of Pleasant Hill Library, said the new equipment expands people's experience when they go to the library.

"It's just one more tool for learning and creativity, and people interact with the library many different ways and this just gives them one more opportunity," Scheide said.

The first person to use the 3-D printer was a young student who made a Harry Potter pendant. "He was very excited about it," Scheide said. "It was simply for pleasure."

The 3-D printer can also be used for functional uses. Scheide said another boy came in to the library because he was missing a connector piece for some sort of toy race track. The boy had found a file that looked like the missing connector and he used the 3-D printer. The piece snapped onto the track perfectly.

"He was really excited and I was amazed that it did fit," Scheide said.

Both the 3-D printer and the new iMac are available for community members to reserve. Reservations can be made for up to two hours at a time. The equipment is free for the public to use.

Pleasant Hill Library will host an iLAB open house 4-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29. The event will have demonstrations and project examples. Staff will also be available to showcase the new 3-D printer.

In addition, the library will host several half-hour introductory sessions for 3-D printing. Library users will learn the basics of how 3-D printers work and how to get started 3-D printing in the iLAB. Registration is required and the sessions are geared for ages 12 and older.

Introductory classes will be 4 and 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12, March 15, April 4 and May 14.
