Hastings residents will soon see a mural on the back of the Hastings Family Service building facing Levee Park, the City of Hastings announced Monday, Aug. 9. The mural will celebrate Hastings’ history of diversity and will be done by Daniela Bianchini and Pablo Diego Perez Riesco (aka Kalaka). Work on the mural will begin mid-August with an event to “see the artist work” on August 19 at 6 p.m. The same night will be the Makers Market Alleyway event and Music in the Park at the Rotary Pavilion.
The mural is made possible by the city’s Public Arts Grant Task Force, which received 14 bids for the mural from artists across the country. The theme of the mural is “Our Growing Diversity, Welcoming the Future” and was initially planned for last year before the pandemic hit.
Bianchini has done several mosaics, including pieces at the University of Minnesota and St. Paul Downtown Alliance, while Kalaka’s work can be found in Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Germany, France and the United States.
Work on the mural is expected to be done in early September and a dedication is currently planned for Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m.
