The first baby to be born at Regina Hospital in 2017 was David Benjamin Marshall. The baby boy was born at 6:03 p.m., Jan. 1, 2017, to parents Kassey and Aaron Marshall of Prescott, Wis. He weighed 8 lbs, 1.4 oz, and measured 20.75 inches long.
David has one sibling, 11-year-old Carter Perry, and Kassey and Aaron said there is already a brotherly connection between the two. Whenever David hears Carter's voice he seems to smile, they said.
Nurses presented the family with a gift basket in celebration of having the first newborn of the New Year. Inside the basket there was everything from diapers, wipes and onesies to gifts cards, treats and relaxation tea.
The parents were surprised by the gift basket because they didn't even think about David being the New Year baby. Kassey said it was also so late in the day when he was born that it didn't even cross their minds.
David's name has some special meaning to the family. Aaron said that the end of 2016 was difficult because Aaron's father and Kassey's grandmother both passed away. But David's name honors both sides of the family. David's first name was also the name of Aaron's father and David's middle name, Benjamin, was the last name of Kassey's grandparents.
"That's why we think (David) waited until the first (to be born) because 2016 was so hard and we just wanted to start 2017 better," Kassey said.
