Afternoon of summer music is planned Aug. 30

Hastings residents Gordon Gathright, left, and Bill Strom, along with their families, will provide musical entertainment Sunday, Aug. 30, at Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church. A free will offering will benefit Hastings Family Service.

The two men enjoy each other's company and voices, and have sung as soloists and together in concert.

Bill Strom and Gordon Gathright and their families, and a few friends, too, will present an afternoon of music at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 W. Ninth St. A free will offering will be taken for Hastings Family Service.

Strom recalled how the two began to enjoy each other's voices in the 1990s, and they did some concerts together. Then that ceased. because they both had other commitments.

This past spring, they started talking again about doing a concert together.

"'Let's do it,' we said," Strom said.

"The biggest thing for us is the desire to sing," Gathright said. "And we wanted to sing for a purpose."

Both were, and are, familiar with Hastings Family Service. Chris Koop, Hastings Family Service executive director, was contacted and appreciated the idea.

"For us, our music is a gift, and we wanted to share it with the community," Gathright said.

"And it (HFS) is a fine agency," Strom said.

Strom's wife, Sara, and son, Pete, will be part of the concert, as will Gathright's wife, Linda, and their three children, Rachel, Andrew and Rebekkah.

"We both have spouses who, along with their patience, have skills to bring to the program," Strom said.

The concert will offer a mix of music, including folk, classical and jazz.

"This is music people will like," Strom said. "They will not be bored."

The concert will be about an hour and a half in length, with a break that will allow Koop to talk about Hastings Family Service and the services it provides.

Both Strom and Gathright have been involved with other musical programs in the area. Most recently, Strom, a baritone, has sung with the Augsburg Centennial Singers and the Exultate Chamber Choir and Orchestra. Gathright, a tenor, sings with the Augsburg Centennial Singers and the Courier Quartet.

"This will be a fun afternoon - to celebrate life and faith," Strom said. "And it's for a good cause."
