Community gathers to celebrate Police Week

This week, local law enforcement officers and community members joined together to celebrate Police Week with the fifth annual Police Week Open House.

The Hastings Police Department opened its garage doors and blocked off a small section of Sibley Street to host the community and recognize those who work hard to protect Hastings.

The open house gave the community a chance to meet law enforcement officers, as well as check out squad cars and other equipment used by the department.

The Hastings Fire Department and the Dakota County Sheriff's Office also joined in on the celebration with a fire truck, ambulance, and special equipment from the Sheriff's Office parks, lakes and trails division.

The Police Week Open House is also a chance to recognize specific officers for the work that they have done in the past year. In a presentation, Chief Bryan Schafer honored 13 officers with awards in seven categories.

A group of 15 retired officers and staff were also invited and honored during the presentation. Awards were presented as follows:
