Giving back: Volunteer opportunities in Hastings this season

Volunteering is a great way to spend time with families and friends, all while giving back and helping those in need.

There are many ways to give back to the Hastings community — the opportunities listed below are just a few. Don't be afraid to reach out to an organization or cause you are passionate about and see how you can help. Grab the family or your friends and find a way to do some good in the community.

Food4Kids

The United Way of Hastings is looking for volunteers to help package food for its Food4Kids program between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19. Volunteers can show up any time and do not need to register beforehand.

UWH can be found downtown at 113 Second St. E. in the old Meyer Co. Building.

The Food4Kids program helps make sure that children who rely on school meals during the week have food to eat over the weekend. Each bag contains two meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner that are kid-friendly and easy to prepare.

Project Share

Project Share is the Hastings Family Service holiday season project to provide help to families and individuals in need.

Now through Dec. 20, HFS is looking for volunteers to help with a variety of jobs at different times Mondays through Saturdays.

Some volunteer opportunities are helping load cars with groceries and gifts, helping get Adopt-a-Family gifts ready for distribution or assisting with shopping and wrapping.

To look at open opportunities, dates and times visit the Project Share page on the HFS website, hastingsfamilyservice.org.

Hastings Family Service

Hastings Family Service is looking for volunteers beyond the holidays. They are looking for weekly or substitute volunteers to help fill gaps that open during the winter when the holidays are over.

Volunteers are needed in the Donation Center, at the Rivertown Treasures Thrift Store and the Market food shelf. Drivers are also needed for the Just Friends transportation program, Meals on Wheels and for food shelf pickups.

Those who are interested can fill out a volunteer application on the HFS website, hastingsfamilyservice.org.
