The Chase Passauer Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Friday, Aug. 11, at the Dakota Pines Golf Club in Hastings. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Chase Allen-Lloyd Passauer Memorial Scholarship at the University of Minnesota.

Passauer died in a shooting in St. Paul last year when he was working in a law office above the W.A. Frost & Co. restaurant on Selby Avenue. His killer, Ryan David Petersen, was found guilty of all charges against him including first-degree murder.

"To be able to do some good outside of (the murder and trial) is something that I've wanted to do for a while," said Chris Passauer, Chase's father.

Chase Passauer graduated from Hastings High School and got his bachelor's degree at the University of Minnesota in political science and philosophy. He was planning to become a lawyer and was working as a law clerk. He had also worked as an umpire with Northstar Umpires.

Chris Passauer said that the endowment is something Chase would be proud of because of the way he was and how much he liked to help other people. Chase would have done some good in the world, he said.

"The benefit is just keeping Chase's name alive and really help other kids out," Chris Passauer said.

The beauty of the endowment fund is that it will continue beyond the lives of those who started it. In addition, whatever people put into it will just keep growing.

The goal is to reach $50,000 for the University of Minnesota endowment fund in memory of Chase Passauer. The scholarship will provide opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing a degree in law or a sports degree with an emphasis in baseball/umpiring.

In addition to the golf tournament, there will be a silent auction, raffles and prizes during and after the dinner. Items will include Minnesota Wild tickets, Vikings tickets, gift cards, gift baskets and more.

Passauer said that there are still sponsorship opportunities available for the benefit. Community members can still register for the tournament too. For more information about the benefit, visit

Check-in for the tournament will begin Aug. 11 at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. The dinner only check-in will begin at 4 p.m. with cocktails, dinner and programming to follow.

For community members who are unable to attend the event, but would still like to contribute to the cause they can make a donation at
