It's quaint, quirky and opening in downtown Hastings

A one-stop shop for all things "gifts" will not only be joining the businesses in downtown Hastings, but it will add to the growing arts community. Products will include everything from flowers, cards and balloons to candy, oils, soaps, books and more.

Quaint & Quirky, located at 202 Second St. E., will open June 1. Owner Jodi Norgaarden said the focus of the shop is on unique Minnesota businesses with many of the products coming from Minnesota artists. Her goal is to have 90 percent of the shop products come from Minnesota artists.

"I have loved artists and I really admire people who find a way to express themselves and make a living at it," she said.

Her passion for the arts wasn't the only reason for wanting to open up a shop. Norgaarden has a background in floral design. Her work was cut short last year when she had an accident resulting in a broken leg and the need for a hip replacement. During the healing process she had a lot of time to think about what she wanted to do.

"I toyed with owning my own business," Norgaarden said.

The combination of flowers and admiration for artists turned into the business idea and Hastings was the perfect location. Norgaarden said she grew to love the downtown area through visits to the car shows and walking by the river.

The store name came out of a quick Google search for words related to whimsy.

"Quirky and quaint came up which was exactly fitting where I was at in my whole journey and I just really liked the names," Norgaarden said.

In addition, Norgaarden said downtown Hastings has always had a quaint feeling to her and the name is a curious one, which will hopefully peak people's interest.

Norgaarden said she hopes to host art classes and events at her store in the future. She would like to see artists brought in to help people paint, make edible bird houses or fairy gardens. Speaking of fairies; there is one hiding inside the store featured on a wall mural. The mural was painted by an artist and will include a few other painted critters that visitors can find.

Quaint & Quirky will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
