Olive Dogs Grooming Salon just opened up in Hastings and lead groomer Crystal Rego said that she is ready to serve the canine clients of Hastings.

Rego and her husband Robert Coonrod, both Hastings High School graduates of 2005, have opened a dog grooming salon in the middle of June at 1030 N. Frontage Road, Hastings. The salon has a shabby chic decor and Rego said that she is going for a charming and mellow vibe that will help dogs feel at home.

Just like humans, dogs feel better when they are groomed, Rego said. It is beneficial to their looks, but also for their physical health. Salon services include things like a bath, blow dry, hair cut or deshedding, nail trim and file, and ear clean. Rego said that there is even a spa mud bath treatment.

The name of the grooming salon is sort of a play on words in two different ways. It means that she grooms all dogs as in a variety. She enjoys grooming everything from a tiny Chihuahua to the largest Great Pyrenees. Secondly, "Olive Dogs" means that "I love them," she said.

Rego has about five years of experience grooming. After completing an introductory grooming course at Rio Gran grooming school, she continued her training at All Breed Dog Grooming in New Richmond, Wis., where she has been since 2011.

It wasn't until after she had her daughter that she decided it was time to open her own salon. Rego and Coonrod currently live in Hudson, but they both grew up in Hastings, so it was the perfect city to open a grooming salon.

Rego said that dog grooming is very rewarding. Each dog is different whether that is in the form of a different haircut or a different personality. One of her favorite parts of grooming is when she sees the dogs get so excited to come into the salon for their haircut. Even the dogs who are a little more nervous tend to enjoy their experience.

"It's kind of funny because there will be dogs that are just shaking like a little leaf and ... as soon as mom or dad leave almost all of them stop," Rego said.

Olive Dogs Grooming Salon is currently open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Appointments can be made by calling 651-230-7590. More information is available at
