With Arbor Day having just occurred on April 27th, I would like to remind residents that our ash trees are at great risk with the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) insect spreading in the community. Approximately 25 percent of the trees in Hastings are ash trees. They are all at risk of dying in the next several years by this infestation unless proactive steps are taken to treat the trees with an insecticide.
At a time when indisputable scientific evidence tells us that we must rapidly take action to alter the effects of climate change, this past week President Trump pulled our country out of the Paris Climate Accord. The goal of the accord is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent to 28 percent by the year 2025. Of the 196 countries, now only the Nicaragua, Syria and the United States are not committed to achieving this goal to slow global warming. Today more than ever, it is at the local level that we have to step up our efforts to lead the way.
