A 6-year-old girl died of an apparent drowning June 4 at Lake Elmo Park Reserve, authorities said.
Kenneth Nelson was awarded the Outstanding EMS Action by a Citizen Award. The award honors a private citizen in Dakota County for a lifesaving act in which quick thinking, fast action and heroism were demonstrated. The award was presented by the Dakota County EMS Council and nominated by Hastings firefighter/paramedic Ryan McGraw.

An Eagan motorcyclist was killed in a head-on crash early Saturday on Highway 61 in Denmark Township. Joe Neal Hansmeier, 43, was driving a Harley Davidson in a southbound lane of Highway 61 north of the Hastings bridge when he collided with a northbound Kia OLX driven by Rachel Marie Dickson, 22, of Cottage Grove, according to the State Patrol. The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m.
ST. PAUL — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton collapsed during his State of the State speech Monday night, Jan. 23, getting up and walking away a few minutes later. It was not immediately clear what happened to him. When he got up, he waved and walked to a back room. The husband of a Cottage Grove woman found dead in her home two months ago has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her. Police on Tuesday arrested Stephen Carl Allwine, 42, and booked him at the Washington County jail on probable cause second-degree murder in connection with 43-year-old Amy Louise Allwine’s death.
All three south Washington County lawmakers will be involved when the Legislature crafts a new state public works funding bill. Dan Schoen, DFL-St. Paul Park, is serving on the Senate Capital Investment Committee, and Reps. Tony Jurgens and Keith Franke both landed spots on the House Capital Investment Committee as freshman legislators. Those committees assemble the so-called bonding bill that funds state and regional construction projects and puts state-borrowed money toward some local construction projects.
Rep. Dan Schoen will lead a meeting Tuesday, Dec. 20, on public safety workers who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Schoen, DFL-St. Paul Park, is convening the roundtable after a bill he proposed that would identify PTSD as a work-related illness failed to get a hearing during the 2016 legislative session. He plans to introduce a similar bill in 2017, when he will begin his first term in the Senate.
A driver was transported by ambulance after his pickup truck collided with a semitrailer at a busy U.S. 61 intersection Monday in Cottage Grove.
