Saint Mary’s University elementary education major Katherine Zuzek, daughter of Mark and Janet Zuzek of Hastings, was nominated for the university’s Outstanding Senior Female Award. For the past 47 years, Saint Mary’s has honored a male and a female senior who have demonstrated the ideals of scholarship, character, leadership, service to colleagues and the university community, as well as genuine concern for the needs of others. Zuzek has demonstrated these qualities through her involvements including Kappa Delta Pi National Education Honor Society and Delta Epsilon Sigma Nationa
Jerry Smith and Doreen Bauer Smith announce the engagement of their daughter Kristen Smith to Eric Kilpo. Kristen is a 2005 graduate of Hastings High School and went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in math and math education. She is now in her fourth year of teaching at A.I. Jedlicka Middle School in Proctor. Eric is the son of Larry and Donna Kilpo of Duluth. He attended Lake Superior College in Duluth and is now a full-time firefighter for the City of Duluth. Kristen and Eric are planning a late summer wedding in Duluth where they will be living.
Luke Edward Schiefelbein has achieved the top two percent ranking in the College of Engineering at Iowa State University. Schiefelbein is currently a sophomore at the college.
Alexis Merte and Douglas Kvamme were married on March 1, 2014, at the Colony Club in Detroit, Mich. The bride is the daughter of James Merte and Cathy Melton of Ann Arbor, Mich. She is a 2010 graduate of Belmont University with a bachelor of business administration. The groom is the son of Michael and Rose Kvamme of Hastings. He is a graduate of Hastings High School and Bethel College with a bachelor of arts in marketing.

The Mill City String Trio will perform at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, March 23. The March 23 concert is open to the public. The Mill City String Trio is a part of the Mill City String Quartet and will perform a Beethoven Trio and three tangos. The Mill City String Quartet was founded in Minneapolis/St.

This year’s celebration will be held this Sunday, March 16, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. The observance begins with 11:30 a.m. Mass, followed by the Irish meal in Mother Seton Hall.
Viterbo University announces dean’s list Alexandra Marshall and Ashley Rink, both from Hastings, were named on the Viterbo University, La Crosse, Wis. fall 2013 dean’s list. University of Northwestern announces dean’s list Zachary J. Biermaier has been named to the University of Northwestern, St Paul fall 2013 dean’s list.
Ray and Vonda Lucking of Hastings announce the engagement of their son Adam to Nicole Pommerening, daughter of Vince and Mary Pommerening of Cottage Grove. An outdoor wedding is planned for September at the home of Nicole’s grandparents Gene and Leida Pommerening of Cottage Grove. Nicole is a 2008 graduate of Park High School and a 2013 graduate of Argosy University. She has an associate degree in radiologic technology and works at Shriner’s Hospital and Renewal by Andersen. Adam is a 2008 graduate of Hastings High School and a 2013 graduate of the University of Minnesota.
Wyatt Joseph Majeski was born on January 1, 2014, at Regina Medical Center to Jake and Elizabeth Majeski of Hastings. Grandparents are Bob and Cindy Majeski of Hastings and Marilyn Orloske of Rosemount. Wyatt weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was 20 inches long.
After a very successful turnout in 2013, A Healthier Hastings 4 All (AH-HA) is back for a second year to provide free health screenings for employees of small businesses in Hastings. This includes spouses or family members over the age of 18. The screenings will take place Tuesday, March 4, and Wednesday, March 5, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the lower level of Allina Health – Nininger Clinic, 1285 Nininger Road in Hastings.
