As backyard poultry-keepers prepare their flocks this spring season, Minnesota Department of Health is reminding families of a few safety tips to avoid spreading illness. Though raising small flocks of poultry such chickens and ducks can provide sources of eggs, meat and learning opportunities, the MDH warns of the risk of bacterial infections from handling birds, especially for children under five, the elderly, women who are pregnant and people with weakened immune systems.
Goodhue County Attorney's Office issued a criminal complaint April 19 in the shooting death of a Red Wing man. Charles Deonta Jones, 26, faces two counts of second-degree murder, one count of third-degree murder and one count of second-degree manslaughter in the death of Dangelo Masterjohn, the attorney's office announced Wednesday afternoon. A second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison. The complaint alleges Jones shot Masterjohn in the chest at short range in the early morning hours of April 18.

Following a stretch of unseasonably warm temperatures in February, snow is back in the forecast. Minnesota Department of Transportation is urging drivers to plan ahead and be cautious in work zones when heading out of town for the holiday weekend. "Although major construction projects will be on hold for the weekend, motorists may still encounter lane restrictions and traffic delays," Transportation Commissioner Charlie Zelle said in a news release. "Your safety is important to us, so we ask that you plan your routes, stay alert and drive carefully in work zones."
A Hastings man was booked into Goodhue County Adult Detention Center on $100,000 bail Friday on felony drug charges and fleeing police. Chad Anthony Robinson, 29, was apprehended the night of March 23 after allegedly fleeing a Cannon Falls police officer in a vehicle containing more than 56 grams of methamphetamine, according to a warrant filed March 24. According to the complaint: The officer spotted a red pickup truck around 11:29 p.m. without headlights on near the intersection of County Road 29 and Holiday Avenue in Cannon Falls.
