More than 150 volunteers had registered before Sunday’s Gather4Good activity at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Hastings. Then, another 100 walked in to help pack the 2,500 personal care packages. Stacie Suedkamp of Catholic United Financial, helping with the registration, seemed in awe of the generosity of the people giving of their time. “They just keep coming,” she said.
Sixty years ago, Vernon Conzemius was a 14-year-old Hastings school boy, attending classes and helping on his family farm. He also had a hero — another Hastings native, Bob McNamara, who was a star player on the University of Minnesota Gopher football team as Conzemius was growing up.

They were quite the football team by any standard. The 1948 Hastings Raider football team coached by Lin Hildebrandt was undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the state at the end of the season. They were good, supported by the community and team members had respect and admiration for each other. That admiration is still there 65 years later.
