Two passengers in a Honda Civic were killed when the driver of their vehicle apparently failed to yield the right of way to another vehicle, a Toyota Rav4, on Highway 52 at 280th Street, and was broadsided by that vehicle shortly after noon Saturday, July 27.
In 18 years, the Hastings chapter of the American Cancer Society has raised more than $1 million during its annual Bridge to a Cure events. More will be raised this Friday, Aug. 2, when the 19th annual Relay for Life Bridge to a Cure is held from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Hastings High School. The name has been changed this year — “Relay for Life” is back as part of the official title.
The back-to-school supplies are in the stores and the recent cooler temperatures are reminders of the soon-to-be fall. Another reminder - Hastings Middle School has scheduled its student orientation for the 2013-2014 school year. Students in grades 5 and 8 and those new to the school may attend from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, in the Middle School cafeteria. Informational presentations will be offered at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the auditorium.
The musical, “Annie” literally fills the stage at Hastings High School. With a cast of more than 120 people and musicians, and numerous sets, the Black Dirt Theater’s show is set to be shared with the Hastings community this week.
A 48-year-old Vadnais Heights man, John Charles Killeen, faces one count of intentional discharge of a firearm (felony) in connection with a Nov. 29 incident at Spring Lake Park near Hastings. Killeen apparently shot at a fellow duck hunter at the park.
This summer and fall, the Star Gazette will be doing its best to inform readers of when paddleboats are set to come through the city on the Mississippi River. Several trips through Hastings were set to be made in July by the American Queen, but the trips were cancelled due to the high water.
Fifty-five years ago Carroll Simmons gave the LeDuc Historic Estate to the Minnesota Historical Society. Beginning during Rivertown Days, July 20, and continuing through Oct. 27, 2013, Simmons will be honored as stories about him will be included in the regular guided tours. These special tours will include the showing of the video in the library, sharing of information as to how the house looked during the Simmons era, and an explanation of how the life of Carroll Simmons and the LeDucs was intertwined.
