Laura Mae "Tudy" Green, of Hastings, Minn., formerly of Wesley, Iowa, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Regina Care Center in Hastings following a lengthy illness. Laura was born May 3, 1924, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to H. Sidney and Bertha C. (Davis) Lundgren. She grew up in and attended school in Crystal Lake, Iowa. She enjoyed sports of all kinds and was a basketball player at her school, the team's high scorer on the state championship team. She was an avid card player, an excellent seamstress, and she loved poetry, and was active in local 4H groups.
John E. Sauter, age 89, of Cannon Falls, died at his home on Friday afternoon, Jan. 8. John was born on Nov. 14, 1920, in Garden Grove, Iowa, the son of Earl and Blanche (Cartwright) Sauter. He was raised in rural Iowa and attended country school near Alta, Iowa. In 1944, he went to serve with the U.S. Army in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. John married Ruby Goodvin of rural Kenyon on Sept.
Frances M. "Fran" Shannon Frances M. "Fran" Shannon, age 82, of New Hampton, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center in New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Hampton. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 5:30 p.m. Scripture service.
Donald E. "Don" Koestner, age 86, of Pine River, Minn., formerly of Silver Bay, Minn., passed away peacefully on Dec. 23, 2009, at the home of his daughter. Don was born in St. Paul, and after serving in the U.S. Army in China during WWII, used his GI bill to attend the Minneapolis School of Art. Upon graduation, he built a cabin near Hastings, Minn., to pursue his dream of becoming a traditional landscape painter. He lived in Hastings for 30 years before moving to Silver Bay. His passion for painting in oils never abated and he painted into his eighties.
Sylvia G. (Sommers) Farrell, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Dec. 29, 2009, in Bellflower, Calif., at the age of 95. Sylvia was born in Hastings, Minn., in 1914. Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, James, and daughter, Donna. She is survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren whom she loved very much. She is loved and will be greatly missed. A funeral mass celebrating Sylvia's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Saint Bernard Catholic Church in Bellflower.
Aaron D. O'Dell, 40, husband of Merry (Keetley) O'Dell, formerly of Hastings, passed away suddenly in Orcutt, Calif., on Dec. 28, 2009. Aaron was born on Oct. 18, 1969, in Albuquerque, N.M., to Eve Stith (previously O'Dell) and Delbert D. O'Dell. Aaron was a 1988 graduate of Sandia High School in Albuquerque. He went on to become a journeyman electrician in Santa Maria, Calif. He was the superintendent at Imperial Electric Co. in Goleta, Calif. Aaron was a member of the IBEW Local #413 and the Elks Lodge #1538. Aaron's biggest dream was to be a husband and father.
Agatha M. "Aggie" Hoffmann, age 94, of Hastings, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Trinity Care Center in Farmington. Agatha was born Feb. 4, 1915, in Vermillion to Mathias and Mary (Kummer) Marshall. She married Frank Hoffmann on Nov. 21, 1942, in Abilene, Texas, and was a homemaker. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and 12 brothers and sisters. Agatha is survived by her children, Marlene (Marlin) Reinardy of Hampton, Dennis (Ann) of Red Wing, Frank Jr.
Barbara Ann Samuelson, age 71, of Hastings, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at the United Hospital in St. Paul. Barb was born June 24, 1938, in Hastings, to Day and Gertrude (Erickson) Samuelson. She attended Hastings schools, and had provided at-home adult and child day care for various Hastings families. She was preceded in death by her parents. Barbara is survived by her brothers, John "Jack" Samuelson and Ed (Beverly) Samuelson, both of Hastings; sisters, Judy M.
Rev. Harold C. Freeman Jr. passed away Dec. 30, 2009, at the Trinity Care Center in Farmington after a year-long battle with major illness. He was born in Horton, Kan., on Sept. 27, 1926, to Harold Sr. and Margaret Freeman. The family eventually moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where Harold enlisted in the U.S. Navy (1943-1946) and graduated from Whittier High School (1944). In 1950, he married his dental hygienist Joella Wilson. After that, he received a bachelor of chemistry degree at the University of California Berkeley (1952).
