Schreiner deserves re-election To the editor, I am writing to urge fellow members of Dakota Electric Association (DEA) to re-elect Margaret Schreiner to the Board of Directors. I first met Margaret in 1987, just after she was elected to the DEA Board and while I was the Government Affairs Director at United Power Association, a predecessor to DEA's current power supplier. I remember thinking after that very first conversation how impressed I was by this smart, articulate woman.

How long should governmental agencies be required to retain emails before purging them? Longer than you might first think. A measure working its way through the Minnesota Senate would require schools, cities, townships, counties, etc., to retain electronic records for at least 18 months. That certainly would be better than a mere year, as one House lawmaker proposes, but 18 months doesn't cut it when you consider how long it takes governments to act on some issues.
Four Hastings students were part of the Minnesota Band Director Association's 7-8 and 9-10 honor jazz bands recently. Jonah Walt, Ben Siebenaler, Carter Teegarden and Allison Amy performed at Lakeville South High School Saturday, March 4. The 7-8 Band was under the direction of Dr. John Paulson and the 9-10 Jazz Band was under the direction of Doug Little.
The city of Hastings and Dakota County will be testing the new backup system for siren activation on Wednesday, March 15, at 1 p.m. to ensure that the system is working properly. There will be a brief siren test on the city of Hastings and Dakota County sirens within ten miles of the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant.
Annual town meetings are a form of direct democracy To the editor, Every year Minnesota townships are required to have an "Annual Town Meeting." It is held the second Tuesday of March, which is March 14 this year. It is a true form of direct democracy, encouraging all members of the community to participate.
