Temporary emergency shelter for neighbors experiencing homelessness is currently available at Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan. Neighbors must be a Dakota County resident and cannot have an open case for public assistance in another county. This shelter is for single adults only. For information, contact the Dakota County Housing Crisis Line at 651-554-5751. After business hours, call the Dakota County Crisis Line at 952-891-7171. Those in need of emergency shelter who also have children should call the Housing Crisis Line.
When we voted in the 2016 general election, we became winners. We have a continued faith in our republic form of government. Through 200-plus years, we have learned about our candidates by mouth, newsprint, radio, TV, computers and social media. We know that those elected would prefer that they become invisible, and not hounded by the media.
A number of students from Hastings Middle School were selected for the Minnesota American Choral Director's Association Honor Choir. The students performed with about 300 other selected students from Minnesota at St. Andrew's Church in Mahtomedi Saturday, Nov. 19.
The staff at First National Bank in Hastings raised $365 this year by donating $1 each week to dress in casual clothes on Fridays. With the money they raised, the staff adopted a family through the Hastings Family Service Project Share Adopt-A-Family program. "It's so nice to be able to do this together as a staff," said teller Joyce Schmidt, "we had so much fun shopping and wrapping." This is the third year the branch has held the fundraising event.

The cold weather didn't keep people away from the Canadian Pacific Railway Holiday Train stop in Hastings. With the help of the Christ's Family Church, Merchants Bank's 10 Days of Giving and Swipe Out Hunger, food and coin drives at the schools, and a gift from Canadian Pacific Railway at the Holiday Train event, a total of $14,203 and 2,767 pounds of food was raised for Hastings Family Service, the organization reported last week.
Dakota County Chief Deputy Phillip Prokopowicz was presented with the MCAA Meritorious Service Award at the Minnesota County Attorneys Association annual meeting. This award honors an individual who has demonstrated leadership in her or his office, or has served in key roles in the MCAA governance structure to advance the goals of MCAA.

King's Bar and Grill held its 10th annual toy drive recently. The fundraiser was incredibly successful, collecting more than 1,200 toys and more than $6,000 in checks, cash and gift cards.
