James E. Dowell, 79, Red Wing, died Monday, Nov. 8, at his residence. He was born Sept. 17, 1931, in Evansville, Ind., the son of Alvin and Catherine (Reichert) Dowell. He was a 1949 graduate of Evansville High School and he served in the United States Marine Corps. Following his discharge, he married Orena Georgene Bond in Mount Vernon, Ind., on Aug. 21, 1954. He lived and worked in various cities in the U.S. as a master plumber, pipefitter, steamfitter and welder in the construction of power plants. They moved to Hastings in 1971.
Alvin R. Moe Jr., age 77, of Hastings, passed away at Augustana Health Care Center. A full notice will appear in next week's paper. The Wise Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Esther R. Heselton, an avid reader, age 84, of Hastings, passed away at her home on Nov. 7, 2010. Esther was born in Hastings Aug. 30, 1926, to George and Katherine (Rollinger) Matz. She married Lauren Heselton in Red Wing on Oct. 3, 1942. She was a very active woman who enjoyed boating on the Mississippi, outdoor activities, and playing cards with her friends.
Carl W. Schaar, age 102, of Cannon Falls, died Nov. 4, 2010, at Angels Care Center. Carl was born March 23, 1908, in Hastings, to Otto and Maria (Volkert) Schaar. He married Dorothy Keely on Oct. 5, 1935, at St. John's Lutheran Church.
Alice Martha Mae (Paulson) Buske, born Nov. 4, 1930, in Wasioja Township, Dodge County, died Oct. 31, 2010, in Grand Village, Grand Rapids, Minn., at the age of 79. Alice married Lyle George Buske on May 1, 1948, in Rochester. Together they resided in Rochester, Kasson, Hastings, Miesville, Pengilly, St. Charles, and Coleraine, Minn. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, in 2006; a grandson, Nathan Buske, in 2000; one brother and one sister. She is survived by her children, Bruce (Valerie) of Hastings, Brian (Debra) of St.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in St. Joseph, for Gloria A. Linneman, age 83, of Hastings, who passed away on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Regina Senior Living in Hastings. Reverend Joseph Feders, OSB, will officiate. Burial will take place at the parish cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Hastings with parish prayer at 4 p.m. and after 1 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in St. Joseph. Robert Q. Mattila, age 83, of Hastings, passed away with his children by his side on Nov. 3, 2010, at his residence. Robert was born Sept. 5, 1927, in Sebeka, Minn., to William and Esther (Hepola) Mattila. He served in the U.S. Navy post-WWII and married Ellen Luoma on Sep. 12, 1947, in Sebeka.
Evelyn died Nov. 4, 2010, surrounded in the love of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Edwin Buehring; her sisters, Agnes Jasna and Patricia Pierik; and her husband, Russell Pangerl Sr., who died in a farming accident February 1964. Born on Sept. 13, 1925, in Rush City, Minn., to Henry and Marie Buehring, she was the youngest of four children. She and Russell eloped Feb. 14, 1949. Four children blessed their union: Russell Jr., Susann, Linda, and Debra.
Betty Bailey, of Hastings, passed away Nov. 1, 2010, at the age of 82, after courageously facing down serious illness over the past five years. Betty grew up in southwest Missouri and still has many friends and family members there. She was swept off her feet by the dashing Luther (Bud) Bailey after being introduced to him by her sister Laverne and Bud's brother Bob. They married in March 1947 and had four children: Michael (Sheila) Bailey of Peculiar, Mo., Kathleen (James) Carlson of Eagan, Minn., Karen (Ken) Harrington of Hastings, and Linda Bailey of Auburn, Wash.
Harold "Hal" Kuehn, WWII Veteran, June 12, 1921 - Oct. 30, 2010. Preceded in death by wife, Jean, on May 9, 1993. Survived by stepson, Dennis Johnson; step-grandsons, Dennis, Marty and Chris; sister-in-law, Bernice Kuehn; many nieces and nephews. Former employee of Keebler Company for 25 years and was a member of Moose Lodge #963 for 15 years. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at Hazel Park Congregational United Church of Christ, 1831 Minnehaha Ave. E., St. Paul, with visitation one hour prior.
