June Constance Belle Ista, age 81, of Hampton, was unexpectedly called home to be with God on Thursday evening, April 14, 2011, at United Hospital in St. Paul. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastors Phillip Ruud and Daniel Forsgren officiating. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls.
Helen M. Simning, age 70, of Hastings, passed away April 15, 2011, peacefully, at home surrounded by family, after a year-long battle with lung cancer. Preceded in death by parents, Robert and Clarissa Strand, and brother, Henry Strand. She is survived by her children, John (Marcia), Christine (special friend Stephen Flor); sisters, Alice (Mark Tarner) Strand and Billie (Tom) Barthelemy; and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Helen's life will be held from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at the American Legion Post 47, 50 Sibley Street in Hastings.
Donald G. Stern, age 81, of Hastings, died April 11, 2011, at United Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. Donald was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Hastings, to Gerald and Margaret (Kordosky) Stern. He was a 1948 graduate of Hastings High School and served in the Air Force as an Airman First Class during the Korean War. Donald married Helen Johnson on June 30, 1951, in River Falls, and worked as a head operator at 3-M prior to retirement.
Catherine M. Eilen, age 85, of Hampton, passed away on April 9, 2011, at the Trinity Care Center in Farmington. Catherine cooked the hot lunch meals at St. Mathias School for many years while also catering many weddings. She also was a part-time assistant clerk at the Hampton post office for many years.
Margaret M. Sheridan, age 87, of Hastings, died April 10, 2011, at her home. She was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Cannon Falls, to Francis and Margaret (Farrell) Judge. Margaret married Wayne "Chic" Sheridan on Aug. 27, 1949, in Cannon Falls. Prior to her retirement, she worked at the Hastings Veteran's Home. Margaret enjoyed going to the YMCA, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. She was very devoted to her family - especially her beloved grandchildren - and also her faith.
Rose Marie Freiermuth, age 85, of Hastings died April 9, 2011, at Ruth Home in Hastings. She was born Feb. 23, 1926, in Hastings, to Joseph and Mary (Welch) Girgen. She attended local schools and was a homemaker. She married Columbus G. Freiermuth on Oct. 22, 1947, at St. Agatha's Catholic Church in Coates, Minn. They enjoyed spending time at their home in Mesa, Ariz., during winters. Columbus preceded Rose Marie in death on Jan.
Harold J. "Hal" Schuebel, age 89, of Cottage Grove, passed away at Woodbury Health Care Center on April 9, 2011. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, at St. Rita's Catholic Church, 8694 80th St. S., Cottage Grove. Gathering 1 hour prior to Mass. A private interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers to the Union Gospel Mission or the Spina Bifida Association of MN. James R. "Jim" Bennis Sr., age 81, of Hastings, died April 5, 2011, at his residence. Jim was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Minneapolis to Joseph and Fern (Nebel) Bennis, and a 1947 graduate of Monroe High School in St. Paul. He married LaDonna Huss Jan. 31, 1948, in St. Paul. She died in 1990. Jim married Julie Crane March 14, 1999, in Hawaii. He was a retired longtime Koch refinery employee. Jim's family was central to his life and he loved spending time at his cabin in McGregor. He was passionate about giving his time to help others. Jim had 35 years of recovery and was active with A.A.
James R. "Jim" Bennis Sr., age 81, of Hastings, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at his home. Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 201 E. 7th St., Hastings, and 1 hour prior to the funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, at Our Saviour's Ev. Cleo Parker, age 101, of Hastings, passed away April 1, 2011, at Augustana Care Center in Hastings. She was born in Lawton, Ky., to William and Elvira Burton on July 17, 1909. Cleo married Shade Parker in Lawton on March 13, 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband, Shade Parker; daughter Dolores Jacks; and her brothers and sisters. Cleo is survived by her daughter Toni Haviland; son Vernon (Monica) Parker; son Don Parker (Barb Conger); daughter Paulette Pilhofer (Patrick Guillory); 17 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
