Dorothy L. (Cogswell) Johnson, age 92, of Hastings, died peacefully June 21, 2011, at home. She was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Attleboro, Mass. She was truly a member of the greatest generation. Dorothy met her husband, Edwin, while she was a USO Hostess in Boston, where he was serving in the U.S. Navy in the early months of WWII. They married Dec. 6, 1944. Dorothy was a longtime, active member of the Hastings Women's Club and the Hastings Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin L.
Jerome "Art" Hoffman, age 82, of Hastings, died June 21, 2011, in River Falls. Jerome "Art" was born May 13, 1929, in Hastings, to Arthur and Theresa (Doyle) Hoffman. He was a 1948 graduate of Hastings High School and served in the National Guard until being called up to serve in Korea. He married Joyce Melby on Oct. 20, 1949, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church parsonage.
Wayne Maurice Giefer, age 68, of Hastings, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2011. He was born on May 24, 1943, to Maurice and Rosella Giefer in Marshall, Minn. He was an accomplished machinist who enjoyed his cabin, fishing, and traveling. Wayne is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter, Lori Giefer; son, Jason Giefer; granddaughter, Nora Giefer; mother, Rosella Olsen; many, many other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 24, at Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 400 9th St. W., Hastings. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m.
Michael A. Lomker, age 39, of St. Paul, died June 19, 2011. Survived by father, Eugene Lomker; mother, Barbara (Gillespey) Lomker; and brother, Mark (Trisha) Lomker. Funeral service, officiated by Rev. Ed Frederick, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 23, at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 201 E. 7th St., Hastings, with visitation 1 hour prior to service. Steven P. Clare passed away peacefully at home June 16, 2011, after a short battle with cancer. Steve was born Aug. 18, 1946, to Pete and Corky Clare, in Minneapolis. He graduated from Monticello High School and attended Hamline University before serving as a petty officer in the U.S. Coast Guard.
John C. Simone, age 54, of Hastings, died June 14, 2011, at home. John was born Aug. 31, 1956, in St. Paul, Minn., to Charles and Beverly (Gustafson) Simone. He married Beverly Jean Peters on Nov. 14, 1981, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hastings.
Judith M. Rogers (Lorentz) died May 18, 2011, at Augustana Health Care Center, Hastings. Preceded in death by husband, Frank; parents, Marvin and Dorothy Lorentz; and brother Peter. Memorial gathering at the Augustana Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 28. Memorials preferred to Augustana, 930 W. 16th St., Hastings, MN 55033 or Disabled American Veterans.
Robert E. Cater, age 95, of Hastings, died June 11, 2011, at his residence. Robert was born April 2, 1916, in Lake City, to Harry and Alice (Merkins) Cater. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Pechacek on Nov. 26, 1938, in Hastings. Robert was an avid hunter and fisherman, volunteered with Red Cross, and was founder of the Dakota County Water Patrol. He attended Lake City and Red Wing schools and moved to Hastings in 1935.
Alvin John Harder, 82, of Lake City, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2011, at his residence. He was born on Sept. 16, 1928, in Lostwood, N.D., to John and Sarah (Lepp) Harder. He grew up in Warroad, attending school there until he began working on the family farm. He later logged and then worked at Marvin Windows. He married Mildred Dick on Sept. 16, 1949, in Langdon, N.D. They lived in Warroad for 7 years, then moved to Hastings for 25 years, where Alvin worked as a mechanic at the Oldsmobile dealer and later as a marine mechanic at Ericksons Marine.
Richard J. Anderson, age 74, of Hastings, passed away June 10, 2011, at Regina Care Center in Hastings. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Eva Anderson; brother, Robert Anderson; and daughter Kristina Anderson. Richard is survived by his wife, Beth; sons, Scott (Alice) Anderson and Kevin Anderson; daughters Sonja (Steven) Foldvari, Alicia McCauley, Heidi Ritt (Lisa Leifeld), and Holin (Jamie) Ryan; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandsons; sister, Louise (Joe) Vincent; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.
