Harold Casper Gesme, age 90, of Cannon Falls, died peacefully at his residence at Twin Rivers on Monday evening, July 11, 2011. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 15, with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls with Pastor Carol Sinykin and Pastor Gary Schulz officiating. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.

Beuford H. "Bushy" Wirt of Hastings, Minn., died July 5, 2011, at Augustana Care Center in Hastings. He was 99 years old. Bushy was born Sept. 30, 1911, in Lewiston, Minn., the son of Henry and Alice (Ogrosky) Wirt. His father started the Lewiston Telephone Co. in 1903, and Bushy grew up with the telephone company. When he was 9 years old, his father had a blacksmith make a pair of climbers for him so he could learn to climb telephone poles. After graduating from high school, he became a full-time employee and later manager of the Pioneer Telephone Co. in the Wabasha and Winona County area.
Betty L. Kulzer, age 70, of Hastings died July 3, 2011, in Rochester. Betty was born on Sept. 11, 1940, in Hastings, to John and Gertrude (Wollmering) Stoffel. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1958. Betty was united in marriage to Robert M. Kulzer on Aug. 25, 1962, in Hastings. She was an avid gardener and cook and loved to travel. Betty retired from the Dakota County District Court after many years as chief deputy clerk.
Nels Knutson, age 20, of Hastings, Minn., formerly of Woodbury, died on July 4, 2011. Services will begin with the interment at Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 8. Lucille Spicer, age 88, of Old Cottage Grove, 1941 Hastings High School graduate, died at home on Friday morning, June 24, 2011. Edward Paul Cyr, age 87, formerly of Forest Lake, died June 29, 2011. Preceded in death by three sisters and brother, Frank Cyr, he is survived by many nieces and nephews. Graveside service with military honors provided by the Ft. Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Assembly Area 2, at 1 p.m. Friday, July 15. Raulo R. Malm, age 89, of Hastings, died June 30, 2011, at his home. Raulo was born May 26, 1922, in Chicago Heights, Ill., to Knute and Edythe (Anderson) Malm. A graduate of Red Wing High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in early 1942 and earned paratroop wings in San Diego. He spent 2 years in Solomon Islands and later returned to the U.S. to train for assault on Iwo Jima. Raulo was part of the first assault wave to hit the beach, saw both flags go up, was wounded and evacuated to the hospital ship. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Dolores G. Persells, age 84, of Gordon, Wis., and formerly of North Hudson, Wis., died on June 28, 2011, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn. Dolores was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Prescott, Wis., the only child of parents William and Gertrude (Schaar) Polenske. Dolores was a graduate of Hastings High School. On June 17, 1961, Dolores would be united in marriage to Leland L. Persells. Though they had no children of their own, their marriage was blessed with family, extended family, and 50 years of love and devotion to each other.
