Lucille Spicer, age 88, of Old Cottage Grove, 1941 Hastings High School graduate, died at home on Friday morning, June 24, 2011. Funeral service was held June 28 at Cottage Grove United Church of Christ, Cottage Grove. Interment Cottage Grove Cemetery. Edward Paul Cyr, age 87, formerly of Forest Lake, died June 29, 2011. Preceded in death by three sisters and brother, Frank Cyr, he is survived by many nieces and nephews. Graveside service with military honors provided by the Ft. Snelling Memorial Rifle Squad will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Assembly Area 2, at 1 p.m. Friday, July 15. Raulo R. Malm, age 89, of Hastings, died June 30, 2011, at his home. Raulo was born May 26, 1922, in Chicago Heights, Ill., to Knute and Edythe (Anderson) Malm. A graduate of Red Wing High School, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in early 1942 and earned paratroop wings in San Diego. He spent 2 years in Solomon Islands and later returned to the U.S. to train for assault on Iwo Jima. Raulo was part of the first assault wave to hit the beach, saw both flags go up, was wounded and evacuated to the hospital ship. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Dolores G. Persells, age 84, of Gordon, Wis., and formerly of North Hudson, Wis., died on June 28, 2011, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn. Dolores was born Nov. 16, 1926, in Prescott, Wis., the only child of parents William and Gertrude (Schaar) Polenske. Dolores was a graduate of Hastings High School. On June 17, 1961, Dolores would be united in marriage to Leland L. Persells. Though they had no children of their own, their marriage was blessed with family, extended family, and 50 years of love and devotion to each other.
Jacqueline Suzanne Baem Scott, age 42, died Thursday, June 23, 2011. Jackie was born on May 26, 1969, in Hastings, Minn. In 1991, Jackie married Mario Scott (Bronx, N.Y.) and resided in Raleigh, N.C. She recently moved back to Minnesota to care for her ailing grandmother and enrolled in college to pursue a nursing degree. Jackie is survived by her parents and stepparents of Hastings, Richard E. Baem (father) and Nancy (Page) Baem (stepmother), Barbara G. (Nelson) Tutterrow (mother) and John D.
Gregory J. Andersen of Hastings, Minn., died on June 24, 2011. He was 44 years of age. Greg graduated from Hastings High School in 1985. He was active in all athletics, most notably downhill skiing.
Melvin L. Giefer, age 91, of Hastings, died June 24, 2011, at United Hospital, St. Paul. He is survived by wife, Carole; children, James (Sandra) Giefer, Muriel Haglind, and Melva Hill; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four siblings. The memorial service, officiated by Fr. Cole Kracke, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 West 15th St., Hastings, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service.
Timothy D. "Tim" McDonald, age 52, of Sauk Centre, Minn., died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at his home, surrounded by family, following a 5-year battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 1, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Miesville, Minn. The Rev. Jay Kythe will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow at the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Todd Zane Mears, formerly of Hastings, passed away June 18, 2011, at Tampa General Hospital. Todd was born April 15, 1970, in Shakopee, Minn., to Francis (Lee) and Rose Mears. He married Amanda Domek on Aug. 8, 2008, in Punta Gorda, Fla. Todd was a master automotive technician for over 20 years and never tired of his work. Todd enjoyed spending time with family and friends and loved having a good laugh.
Richard L. Serres, age 81, of Hastings, died June 23, 2011. Richard was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Marshan Township, to Mark and Ursula (Shannon) Serres. He served in the Army from 1948-1951 and married Deanna Murray Aug. 9, 1958, in Hastings. Richard worked for Koch Refinery prior to retirement. A collector of John Deere toy tractors, Richard was also an avid gardener, known for his cockscomb flower garden west of Hastings.
