Clara C. Conzemius, age 99, of Hastings, died Aug. 24, 2011, at her home. Clara was born Sept. 28, 1911, in Hastings, to Andrew and Mary Majeski. She attended Hastings schools and was a retired 3M employee. Clara married Albert Conzemius on May 12, 1936, in Hastings. She loved her family dearly and will be greatly missed.
Clifford B. Birkholz, age 82, of Hastings, passed away Aug. 22, 2011, at his home in Hastings. He was born in Madison, Minn., on Jan. 24, 1929, to Arnold and Ida Birkholz. Clifford married Marlys Hess in Traverse County on June 29, 1952. In his youth he was an avid basketball player. He loved watching all sports, and was still playing golf and basketball until his final days. He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and the Soo Line Railroad, and in his retirement years worked as a custodian at Allina Clinic.
Dennis J. "Denny" O'Melia, age 77, of Hastings, died peacefully on Aug. 20, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his former spouse, Deanna Devine O'Melia; daughter, Colleen (Joe) Kaufenberg; sons, John and Patrick; grandchildren, Justin, Jeremy, and Mikayla. Denny was born in Santa Barbara, Calif., later moving to Wisconsin and graduating from St. Patrick's High School (Eau Claire) in 1951.
Madeline M. Moes (nee Salzl), age 86, of St. Paul, formerly of Hastings, passed away peacefully at home on Aug. 20, 2011. Preceded in death by parents, Theodore and Ann; husband, Clarence C.; daughter, Linda Keapproth; and siblings, Marie Kelley, John, Theresa Tix, and Peter.
Ann Helene Nygaard, age 82, of Minneapolis, sister of local Olive (Vernon) Hupf of Randolph, died on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at United Hospital in St. Paul. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Northfield United Methodist Church, 1401 S. Maple St., Northfield, Minn., with Pastor Janet White officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery near Hampton, Minn. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and Friday from 9-10 a.m. Arrangements by Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls.
Remedios Nobello, age 89, passed away peacefully Aug. 19, 2011. Funeral was held Aug. 22 at Kok Funeral Home, Cottage Grove. Burial Newport Cemetery.
Elizabeth C. (Haverland) Schnell, age 87, of Hastings, Minn., Augustana Nursing Home, died Aug. 18, 2011. Elizabeth was born on Oct. 19, 1923, in Farmington, Minn. Preceded in death by husband, Norman C. Schnell; one son, Charles; one grandson; one great-grandson; two granddaughters; three sisters; three brothers. Survived by three daughters, Barbara (Bob) of Mesa, Ariz., Ruth of Mesa, Mary (Dick) of Mesa; one son, Roland of St. Paul; 12 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Marybelle of Hastings.
Archie B. Gergen, 92, a retired maintenance worker with Harris Corp., died Aug. 11, 2011. He was born in Hastings, Minn., on the family farm. He moved to Palm Bay, Fla., in 1963 with his family. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, The Catholic Aid Association in St. Paul, Minn., Knights of Columbus, and was an active volunteer at the Palm Bay Senior Citizens Center. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Gorgus Gergen; sons, Steven and John; daughter, Shari Eldridge; and one grandson, Corey Eldridge.
Alvin K. Wenzel, age 90, of Hastings, died Aug. 14, 2011, at the Regina Medical Center in Hastings. Alvin was born Feb. 2, 1921, in rural Hardwick, Minn., to Karl and Freida (Ahrendt) Wenzel. He married Lois Kuechenmeister on March 1, 1945, at St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Luverne, Minn. He had worked in the agricultural field prior to his employment with Hastings Public Schools as a custodian. Alvin was a member and royalty of Polk of A (Polka Lovers of America).
Thomas G. Conzemius, age 64, of Minneapolis, formerly of Hastings, died July 30, 2011, at the Camden Care Center in Minneapolis. Thomas was born on April 23, 1947, in Hastings, to Lawrence and Lenore (Reinhardt) Conzemius. He attended elementary school at St. Boniface and graduated from St. John's Preparatory School in Collegeville. Thomas graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., with a degree in music, and was an accomplished pianist.
