The finals of the Hastings Sings Amateur Vocal competition were held on Sunday, July 21, on the main stage in Jaycee Park during Rivertown Days. From more than 100 auditioning contestants, the final six teens and six adults competed for their share of the $2,500.00 cash awarded by sponsor RBC Wealth Management. Taking the top spot in the division, and receiving $600, was teen Katherine McCord of Hastings. The first place adult was Scott Stoneking of Hudson, Wis.
Last fall, three Hastings women were brought together by their common background in family law. Melissa Remick and Jaime Miller became paralegal interns for Martha Sullivan, who runs a law practice in Hastings. The three connected over their desire to make things easier for families undergoing legal disputes and together, they saw a need for a new business in Hastings specializing in alternative dispute resolution.

Hastings country club One phone call from his uncle changed Mike Callahan's career path. Callahan was studying real estate and finance at St. Cloud State University, where he was also an assistant coach on the golf teams. His uncle, a golf pro at Island View Golf Club in Waconia, gave him a call as graduation was approaching. "It was a casual call, and it turned into, 'What are you doing after college,'" Callahan said. "I didn't have an answer, and he did. He said, 'I've got a position for you, if you want to try it out.'"
Late Friday and early Saturday morning, two Hastings juveniles took a walk through downtown. They left a wake of vandalized property behind them. Their joy ride quickly came to an end -- by Saturday afternoon, both were identified by police. One was arrested and taken to the juvenile detention center. The other was referred to court. One is 15. The other is 14. Both will be facing felony level charges for criminal damage to property. The post office was hit the hardest, with swastikas spray painted on 15 of its vehicles.

A timeline has been set for the hiring of a new chief of police in Hastings. The recruitment process began Tuesday, and applications will be accepted until Aug. 9. The initial group of candidates will be notified by Aug. 19 that they have been chosen for an interview. The first set of interviews will be done the same week and will consist of a three-panel interview that includes the community and other departments. Finalists are expected to be interviewed Sept. 3, and a new chief would be appointed the first week of October.
