Francis Brooke is pictured with another soldier during World War II. Brooke, a Hastings native, died in 2002. Only after his death did his family realize what Brooke had done in the war. His daughter and son-in-law will be in Washington, D.C., next week when Brooke and the First Special Service Force are award the Congressional Gold Medal. (Submitted photo)
